In the fall of 1965 I began my studies of Clothing & Textiles/ Minor in Arts on the campus of Tennessee State University, Nashville Tennessee, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree.
Since the early 1980’s, my work has involved the creation of art on canvas and paper, initially, reflecting images reminiscent of my childhood, i.e., landscapes of the hills of Tennessee. My chosen medium, oil paints. Over the years I switched to acrylic paints, enjoying the ease of covering a surface quickly with vibrant opaque colors. During this time, I re-discovered my love of cloth and my wish to create flowing garments, on the bodies of the strong, dignified female personalities, in my paintings, was born.
The desire to create art is implanted deeply within me. Creating art is my passion. Art should speak to the observers inner most self and cause an emotional reaction, I believe. The viewer’s feelings may range from joy to sorrow or simply provide a glimpse of precious memories. Painting is my way of infusing joy and hope into our world. This is accomplished by my use of up-lifting colors and the fluid movement of the clothes that gracefully adorn the bodies of my images.
My paintings have been exhibited in the following locations: Tom Joyner Foundation Cruise, The Black Madonna Exhibit, Buford SC; National Black Fine Art Show, SoHo, NY; Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta, GA; Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA; Harriet Tubman Museum, Macon, GA; Walt Disney World, Lake Buena Vista, FL; the set of the television show “In The Heat Of The Night”, The Southern Bell Building, Atlanta, GA; and Union Station, Washington, D.C.
